I participated in an experiment for my friend who is an advocate of Eckankar a couple of years ago. It is common for most followers of Eckankar to keep a dream journal. The dream journal gives us insight into our unconcious and also provides us with intuitions about real life. It's fairly easy to do but takes a little bit of extra time in the mornings.
You need to have a sheet of paper and pen near your bed and write the following on the sheet of paper before you go to sleep:
Title: (Just pick one word that summarizes the dream)
Date:
Time:
Dream: (Describe the dream. What did you see? Include characters, people from real life, buildings, animals, etc. Were there shadows? Was it nighttime or daylight? Include as many details as you can and be complete as possible.)
Interpretation: (How do you feel about this dream? What does it mean to you? Describe what you think the dream means. Dreams are very personal so don't write for an audience here. This journal is meant for your eyes only.)
During the night, when you wake up from a dream, immediately write down all of the above information. Sometimes, you may have two or three dreams in one night. Write them all down. If you have trouble remembering your dreams, then you need to recite the following in your head over and over again until you fall asleep: "I will remember my dreams. I will remember my dreams." This will actually program your subconcious to remember what you dreamt when you wake up the next morning.
I did this for a week and a half. As the days progressed, my dreams became more vivid, colorful, and life-like. I was getting deep interpretations into not only my life, but also interepretations of other people's lives too. After a while, I realized that I was sometimes concious in my dreams. For example, I would realize that I was dreaming, and initially this would wake me up, but after a while, it would not wake me and I began to have more control while dreaming.
Another cool ability that you can do is recite what you wish to dream about until you fall asleep. This will actually steer your dreams in the intended direction. The Eckankar people strongly believe that you can visit people (alive or dead) and planets such as Venus, within your dream. Supposively, there is a shrine on Venus dedicated to wisdom that you can visit while dreaming. I decided that I wanted to visit that place and ask for advice in my life.
I recited the words - "I will dream about visiting Venus in search of wisdom. I will dream about visiting Venus in search of wisdom." until I fell fast asleep. In my dream, I was in my mother's kitchen and she was cooking a feast of a breakfast for me and my step-father. He was laid up on the couch with a bad leg (which he has always had, but seemed worse this time.) The dream was actually a couple of years in the future and strangely real. I could actually smell the bacon and grease cooking on the stove. I remember feeling worried for my step-dads health and he seemed more worried about me and my lack of work.
What amazes me is how I could tell exactly how far into the future that this was supposed to happen. I felt older in the dream - almost more mature in a way. Things had progressed since my waking life, and I calculated that this would be almost exactly two years into the future. The feeling I got was - Your parents won't last forever and you should make them proud before they pass away. When I woke from the dream, I was somehow changed. I felt the need to change my lethargic ways and really try to take advantage of the time that I still had left with my parents and perform how they wished for me to. It was a hard pill to swallow. That was the last dream I recorded because I started working at Wal Mart and didn't have time for the project any more.
It is my hope that if some of you try this it will prove to be a fruitful investment of time. Enjoy!
