Hi All, Prophetic Synchronicity is the coincidence of a psychic state with a corresponding future external event — i.e. a foreknowledge in dreams. Jung gives an impressive example of a young friend of his, who, having been promised a trip to Spain by his father, dreamed that he was in Spain, walking in a street which led to a square where there was a Gothic cathedral. He turned to the right and was met in another street by an elegant carriage drawn by two cream-coloured horses. He related the dream to Jung and other friends, and later went to Spain, and in one of the streets recognised the city of his dream, he found the square, the cathedral and to his utter amazement saw the cream-coloured horses and carriage exactly as depicted in his dream. (McBride, 1990) This thread is for the discussion of dreams as they related to synchronistic events. Please feel free to post a comment of make a contribution. Kim

What was the purpose of the synchronicity in this example?
He recognised an aspect of his dream in his waking life...then what?

Okay...just realised the purpose...to recognise prophetic dreams. Sorry. *so embarrassed*

No that's fine. It does seem a bit random and out of context at first read.
Jung said that meaning is ultimately up to the individual to 'get' and it is difficult for someone 'outside' the picture to ascertain what ‘purpose’ a dream-synchronicity might have.
You can ask, "If we dream something, and then it happens, well, so what?" And that is a valid query. Yet the times when these synchronicities occur can be rich with an inner meaning that only the individual understands, and sometimes not until later.
The purpose may even be as simple as to 'wake' the dreamer to the interconnectedness of 'reality'.

Would you say Kim that a dream is your subconscious mind communicating with you?
If that is the case, then dreams and waking life would have a distinct correlation, or synchronicity.

Hi Silver, Carl Jung and Joseph Campbell taught that the language of the unconscious is 'symbol' and in that case, yes, dreams are communications from the unconscious mind to consciousness--as are other symbol systems like tarot, astrology, myths, fairytales and synchronicities of all kinds. Ultimately I don't think we can separate these disciplines in terms of meaning but only in terms of practice. They are all linked. Kim
